No Son Of Mine (Genetics)

On the morning of November 26, 1778, the 100-foot-long, three-masted ship Resolution, captained by the fifty-year-old Englishman James Cook, sailed into view off the northeast coast of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The island's Polynesian inhabitants had never seen a European sailing ship before. The sight of the Resolution just beyond the fierce windward surf must have looked as strange to them as a spaceship from another planet. Yet they responded without hesitation. They boarded canoes and paddled to the ship. From atop the rolling swells they offered the sailors food, water, and in the case of the women, themselves.

One can easily imagine the contrast: the European sailors - gaunt, dirty, many bearing the unmistakable signs of venereal disease - and the Polynesians, a people who abided by strict codes of personal hygiene, who washed every day and plucked the hair from their faces and underarms, whose women had bodies "molded into the utmost perfection," in the words of one early admirer. At first Cook forbade his men to bring the women on board the ship  "to prevent as much as possible the communicating [of the] fatal disease [gonorrhea] to a set of innocent people." In the weeks and months to come, as the Resolution lingered offshore, Cook was far less resolute. Toward the end of 1779, the first of what today are called Hapa Haole - half European, half Native Hawaiian - were born on the island of Maui.

The nineteenth-century stereotype of the South Pacific as a sexual paradise owes as much to the feverish imagination of repressed Europeans to the actions of the Polynesians. The young women who swam out to the ships in Hawaii, Tahiti, and other South Pacific islands were from the lower classes, not from the royalty, which carefully guarded its legitimacy. Many were training to be dancers in religious festivals. They would rise in status by exchanging their sexual favors for a tool, a piece of cloth, or an iron nail.

The Polynesians paid dearly for their openness. At least 300,000 people, and possibly as many as 800,000, lived on the Hawaiian Islands when Captain Cook first sighted them...Over the course of the next century, disease introduced by Europeans reduced the Native population to fewer than 50,000. By the time the painter Paul Gauguin journeyed to the Pacific in 1891, the innocence that the Europeans had perceived among the Polynesians was gone. "The natives, having nothing, nothing at all to do, think of one thing only, drinking," he wrote. "Day by day the race vanishes, decimated by the European diseases...There is so much prostitution that it does not exist...One only knows a thing by its contrary, and its contrary does not exist." The women in Gauguin's paintings are beautiful yet defeated, without hope, lost in a vision of the past.

Today visitors to Maui land on a runway just downwind from the shore where Captain Cook battled the surf eleven generations ago. Once out of the airport, they encounter what is probably the most genetically mixed population in the world. To the genes of Captain Cook's sailors and the native Polynesians has been added the DNA of European missionaries, Mexican cowboys, African-American soldiers, and plantation workers from throughout Asia and Europe. This intense mixing of DNA has produced a population of strikingly beautiful people. Miss Universe of 1997 and Miss America of 2001 were both from Hawaii. The former, Brooke Mahelani Lee, is a classic Hawaiian blend. Her ancestors are Korean and Hawaiian, Chinese and European.

Bernie Adair - who was selling candles at a swap meet in Kahului, Maui's largest town, when I met her - told me that her family's history was typical. Adair, who ancestors came to Hawaii from the Philippines, married a Portuguese man in the 1960s. In the 1980s their daughter Marlene married a man of mixed Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese descent. Adair's granddaughter Carly, peeking shyly at me from under a folding table, therefore embodies four different ethnicities. "These children have grandparents with so many different nationalities you can't tell what they are," Adair said.

Almost half the people who live in Hawaii today are of "mixed" ancestry. What it means to be mixed is not at all obvious genetically, but for official purposes it means that a person's ancestors fall into more than one than one of the four "racial" categories identified on U.S. census forms: black, white, Native American, and Asian or Pacific Islander. Intermarriage is a cumulative process, so once an individual of mixed ancestry is born, all of the person's descendants also will be mixed. As intermarriage continues in Hawaii - and already almost half of all marriages are between couples of different or mixed ethnicities - the number of people who will be able to call themselves pure Japanese, or pure Hawaiian, or pure white (Haole in Hawaiian) will steadily decline.

Hawaii's high rates of intermarriage have fascinated academics for decades. The University of Hawaii sociologist Romanzo Adams wrote an article titled "Hawaii as a Racial Melting Pot" in 1926, and many scholars since then have extolled Hawaii as a model of ethnic and racial harmony. The researchers have always been a bit vague about the reasons for all this intermarriage; explanations have ranged from the benign climate to the "aloha spirit" of the Native Hawaiians. But their lack of analytical rigor hasn't dampened their enthusiasm. One of the goals of the former Center for Research on Ethnic relations at the University of Hawaii was "to determine why ethnic harmony exists in Hawaii" and "to export principles of ethnic harmony to the mainland and the world."

...

The rapid growth of interracial marriages in the United States and elsewhere marks a new phase in the genetic history of humanity. Since the appearance of modern humans in Africa more than 300,000 years ago, human groups have differentiated in appearance as they have expanded across the globe and have undergone some measure of reproductive isolation. This differentiation has always been limited by the recentness of our common ancestry and by the powerful tendency of groups to mix over time. Still, many human populations have remained sufficiently separate to develop and retain the distinctive physical characteristics we recognize today.

In Hawaii the process is occurring in reverse. It's as if a videotape of our species' history were being played backward at a fantastically rapid speed. Physical distinctions that took thousands of generations to produce are being wiped clean with a few generations of intermarriage.

The vision of the future conjured up by intermarriage in Hawaii can be seductive. When everyone is marrying everyone else, when the ethnic affiliation of most people can no longer be ascertained at a glance, one imagines that ethnic and racial tensions would diminish. But spending some time in Hawaii shows that the future will not be that simple. Despite the high rate of intermarriage here, ethnic and racial tensions haven't really disappeared. They have changed into something else, something less threatening, perhaps, but still divisive. Hawaii may well be a harbinger of a racially mixed future. But it won't be the future many people expect.

Nigel Rowe Modern Hawaii is a product of American multiculturalism and multiculturalism reassembles an indigenous group's culture and genes. So, extant Hawaiians (modern, racially admixed Hawaiians) are culturally and genetically unlike their full-blooded Hawaiian ancestors. Hence, a predominantly genetically white Hawaiian (YOU) looking at an ancestral Hawaiian and recognizing that she looks nothing like any currently living Hawaiians (her fragments of DNA may exist, but they exist reassembled alongside European DNA, Asian DNA, etc. in modern Hawaiians like you).
Brandi Kaluhiwa
Nigel Rowe This is for two reasons. Prior to the advent of cars, homes, office buildings, and the like, humans spent much of their time exposed to the elements, particularly the sun, and prolonged exposure to the sun leads to darker skin color. Secondly, prior to European colonization of Hawaii, American multiculturalism in Hawaii (the introduction of various other racial groups to Hawaii), and extensive breeding between Native Hawaiians and non-Native Hawaiians, many ancestral Hawaiians looked like the female you're referring to (they possessed a high proportion of Melanesian DNA).

The Polynesians first reached the Hawaiian Islands around A.D. 400, probably in a migration from the Marquesas Islands. A subsequent wave of people migrated to Hawaii from Tahiti between the twelfth and the fourteenth century. Then the islands saw no more newcomers until Captain Cook's arrival four centuries later.

The discovery of Hawaii by Europeans did not result in an immediate influx of colonists. The early decades of the nineteenth century brought just a trickle of settlers to the islands - washed-up sailors, retired captains, British and Russian traders, missionaries. Large-scale migration began only after the first sugar plantations were established around the middle of the century.  In 1852, three hundred Chinese men arrived to work the plantations. Over the next century nearly half a million more workers followed. They came from China, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico, Spain, Poland, Austria, Germany, Norway, and Russia. Some of these groups have long since disappeared, blending into the genetic background. Others still have a significant ethnic presence on the islands.

https://usgenealogyresearch.atwebpages.com/Hawaii/Hawaii/resources/immigration.html

A few miles from the Honolulu airport is a vivid reminder of those times. Hawaii's Plantation Village is one of the few tourist attractions designed as much for locals as for mainlanders. It meticulously recreates a camp town of the type that once dotted the islands, housing the workers who toiled each day in the sugar and pineapple fields. Each house along the main avenue reflects the ethnicity of the workers who lived there: a large bread oven sits next to the Portuguese  house, rice cookers dominate the kitchen of the Chinese house, crucifixes adorn the walls of the Puerto Rican house. A Japanese shrine is a few doors away from the Chinese society building. Down the hill by the taro fields is a dohyo, a sumo ring, where the workers wrestled every Sunday afternoon.

Mike Hama showed me around the day I was there. The descendant of Japanese, German, Hawaiian, and Irish grandparents, Hama grew up on a plantation camp in the 1940s. "Kids of different nationalities played together in these camps," he told me. "We didn't know we were different." They communicated using a pidgin that combined words from many languages. The German kids taught the other kids to polka in the camp social halls. The Japanese kids taught their friends sumo wrestling. When the Japanese emperor visited Hawaii after World War II, according to a widely told if hard-to-verify story, he was so impressed to see wrestlers of all different nationalities in the dohyo that when he returned to Japan he opened the country's sumo rings to foreigners.

When Hama was eighteen, he joined the military and was stationed in California. "That was a real awakening for me," he recalls. "For the first time I saw the bigotry that was going on outside Hawaii." He moved back to Hawaii as soon as he could and married a woman of mixed ancestry. His four daughters think of themselves as nothing other than local Hawaiians.

The camp towns disappeared decades ago in Hawaii, yet they have left a remarkable legacy. Large-scale segregation in housing remains rare on the islands. People of all ethnic backgrounds live side by side, just as they did in the camp towns. The only people who live in ghettos are the soldiers on military bases and wealthy haoles who wall themselves off in gated communities. Because neighborhoods are integrated in Hawaii, so are most of the schools. Children of different ethnicities continue to grow up together and marry, just as they did in the camps.

Integrated neighborhoods, integrated schools, high rates of intermarriage - the islands sound as if they'd be a racial paradise. But there's actually a fair amount of prejudice here. It pops up in novels, politics, the spiels of standup comics. And its especially prominent in everyday conversation - "talk stink" is the pidgin term for disrespecting another group.

Some of the prejudice is directed towards haoles, who continue to occupy many of the positions of social and economic prominence on the islands (though their days as plantation overlords are long gone). Nonwhites label haoles as cold, self-serving, arrogant, meddling, loud, and even that old stereotype - smelly (because, it is held, they still do not bathe every day). White kids say they'll get beat up if they venture onto certain nonwhite beaches. Occasionally, a rumor sweeps through a school about an upcoming "Kill a Haole" day. The rumors are a joke meant to shock the prevailing sensibilities. But one would not expect such a joke where racial tensions are low.

Other groups come in for similarly rough treatment. The Japanese are derided as clannish and power-hungry, the Filipinos as ignorant and underhanded, the Hawaiians as fat, lazy, and fun-loving. And, as is true of stereotypes everywhere, the objects of them have a tendency to reinforce them, either by too vigorously denying or too easily repeating them.

"Intermarriage may indicate tolerance," says Jonathan Okamura, an anthropologist at the University of Hawaii, "but it doesn't mean we have an egalitarian society on a larger scale." Though he calls his viewpoint a "minority position," Okamura holds that racial and ethnic prejudice is deeply ingrained in the institutional structures of everyday life in Hawaii. For example, the integration of the public schools is deceptive, he says. "Well-off haoles, Chinese, and Japanese send their children to private schools, and the public schools are underfunded. "We've created a two-tiered system that makes inequality increasingly worse rather than better," says Okamura. Meanwhile the rapid growth of the tourism industry in Hawaii has shut off many traditional routes to economic betterment. Tourism produces mostly low-paying jobs in sales, service, and construction, Okamura points out, so people have few opportunities to move up career ladders.

Of course, talented and lucky individuals will get ahead. "Students with parents who didn't go to college come to the university and do well - that happens all the time," Okamura says. "But it doesn't happen enough to advance socioeconomically disadvantaged groups in society."

Several ethnic groups occupy the lower end of the socioeconomic scale, but one in particular stands out: the people descended from the island's original inhabitants. Native Hawaiians have the lowest incomes and the highest unemployment rates of any ethnic group. They have the most health problems and the shortest life expectancy. They are the least likely to go to college and the most likely to be incarcerated.

...

Native Hawaiians should not be seen as simply another ethnic group, the leaders of the community point out. Other cultures have roots elsewhere; people of Japanese, German, or Samoan ancestry can draw from the traditions of an ancestral homeland to sustain an ethnic heritage. If the culture of the Native Hawaiians disappears, it will be gone forever. Greater recognition of the value and fragility of his culture has led to a resurgence of interest in the Hawaiian past. Schools with Hawaiian language immersion programs have sprung up around the islands to supplement the English that children speak at home. Traditional forms of Hawaiian dance, music, canoeing, and religion all have undergone revivals.

This Hawaiian Renaissance also has had a political dimension. For the past several decades a sovereignty movement has been building among the Native Hawaiians that seeks some measure of political autonomy and control over the lands that the U.S. government seized from the Hawaiian monarchy at the end of the nineteenth century. Reflecting the diversity of the native population, several sovereignty organizations have carried out a sometimes unseemly struggle over strategies and goals. One radical faction advocates the complete independence of the islands from the United States. More moderate groups have called for the establishment of a Native Hawaiian nation modeled on the Indian tribes on the mainland. Native Hawaiians would have their own government, but it would operate within existing federal and state frameworks, and its citizens would remain American.

Native Hawaiian sovereignty faces many hurdles, and it is premature to harp on exactly how it would work. But whenever the topic comes up in discussion, a question quickly surfaces: exactly who is a Native Hawaiian? "Pure" Hawaiians with no non-Hawaiian ancestors probably number just a few thousand. Many Native Hawaiian undoubtedly have a preponderance of Hawaiian ancestors, but no clear line separates natives from nonnatives. Some people who call themselves Native Hawaiian probably have little DNA from Polynesian ancestors.

Past legislation has waffled on this issue. Some laws define Native Hawaiians as people who can trace at least half of their ancestry to people living in Hawaii before the arrival of Captain Cook. Others define as Hawaiian anyone who has even a single precontact Hawaiian ancestor. These distinctions are highly contentious for political and economic as well as cultural reasons. Many state laws restrict housing subsidies, scholarships, economic development grants, and other benefits specifically to Native Hawaiians.

As the study of genetics and history has progressed, an obvious idea has arisen. Maybe science could resolve the issue. Maybe a genetic marker could be found that occurs only in people descended from the aboriginal inhabitants of Hawaii. Then anyone with that marker could be considered Native Hawaiian.

Ever wonder why people stick to their own kind, even when the world pushes for mixing everyone up? What if that gut feeling we call "racism" isn't just some ugly flaw, but something baked into our biology from way back when survival meant watching your back around strangers? The History of Racism pulls no punches, taking you through the raw story of how human differences, shaped by evolution, tribes, and blood, have always drawn lines between us. This ain't your standard history book that just lists dates and bad guys; it's a no-holds-barred look at why these divides might not be all bad, maybe even nature's way of keeping things strong. Packed with real talk on everything from ancient empires to today's identity fights, it'll make you question what you've been told about equality and division. Mysterious enough? There's stuff in here that'll stick with you, connecting dots you didn't know were there. - Explores the biological roots of human division and why it's wired in us. - Dives into tribalism, ancient civilizations, and how power played on differences. - Covers slavery, enlightenment thinkers, Darwin's impact, and eugenics without sugarcoating. - Tackles imperialism, world wars, civil rights, genetics, immigration, and more up to 2026. - Ends with a bold rethink on racism as something natural, not always evil, could change how you see the world. "Africans are, and always will be, a people of the bush." — A controversial quote from explorer Henry Morton Stanley in 1878, reflecting the era's views on inherent group differences that fueled colonial mindsets. Grab your copy now and see for yourself why this book's stirring up talks, it's not just history; it's a mirror to what makes us human. Who knows, it might even explain a few things about your own circle.

...the DNA of a population today does not necessarily reflect the DNA of the population in the same spot from thousands of years ago... [WHICH IS WHAT YOU SEE IN MODERN HAWAII ]
...the current residents of a geographical area are not necessarily very good representatives of the residents of the deep past. This is obvious if we look at areas that have been subject to migration by modern Europeans. The majority of the peoples of Australia or North America today are from Europe in the last 500 years, and so their genomes are not representative of the indigenous people who were there first... [WHICH IS WHAT YOU SEE IN MODERN HAWAII]

Culturally amalgamated, modern Hawaiian culture has few cultural boundaries (reproductive isolating mechanisms)  to prevent outbreeding (the destruction of the Hawaiian genome) and thus the genetic death of the Hawaiian ethny (genocide through interracial breeding).

A foreign ethnic group with a foreign culture invading and inundating an indigenous ethnic group's ancestral land and subsequently out-competing and outbreeding that indigenous ethnic group resulting in that indigenous ethnic group's replacement (it's similar to what you see in Hawaii with Samoans and Tongans replacing Hawaiians).

Lips So Lucious!
p. 16-19.
The third chapter explores the dispossession of the native in approximation to whiteness as evidenced in the fetishization of the “Hawaiian girl.” Working with the idea of Hawaiʻi as a United States racial laboratory, Arvin addresses the inherently biological underpinnings of racial mixture, such as the ideologies of hybridity and hyperdescence, in the actualization of a multicultural state, whereby Kānaka Maoli women were objectified by white men and still expected to reproduce the ideal, mixed-race Hawaiian. The author engages with historian Tavia Nyong’o’s argument that antiblackness is evident in the “fear of phenotypic blackness” (118) in Polynesian bodies, which is remedied by a racial hybridization of the Native Hawaiian. The construction of the “Hawaiian girl,” then, is further evidence of the heteropatriarchal, gendered, and misogynistic structures situated within an embodiment of settler colonial whiteness.
Chapter 3 takes up the familiar hula girl icon and pairs it alongside interview data of members of the public in Hawai`i from social scientists in the 1930s, an unlikely duo at first glance. While Arvinʼs analysis of over 200 interview transcripts from nearly 100 years ago is unique, its validity is of some concern for reasons she admits herself, including the time passed since the interviews and not knowing the exact questions asked. However, paired together, these two objects effectively reveal and represent the hatred and allure for Hawaiians that coexisted in the early to mid-twentieth century, a paradox that Arvin argues was made possible by the old standby: possession through whiteness. Across both datasets, it is the “almost” white, or mixed raced, trait of Polynesians that inspires disdain for Hawaiians perceived to be of the Black Melanesian type and lust for Hawaiians. It was precisely because of the Hawaiian girlʼs racial hybridity, which Arvin writes—echoing Tavia Nyongʼo—encouraged white settler men to “think of themselves as experimental breeders, doing their heterosexual reproductive duty for the United States in turning Hawai`i whiter” (118).
Ass So Fat You Can See It From The Front!

Extinction of lineages a reality of nature. For humans, “Extinction follows chiefly from the competition of tribe with tribe, and race with race” (211). If, in prehistoric times, this selection occurred primarily through tribal warfare, Darwin affirms that this selection is continuing. In the nineteenth century, Western civilization was still animated by a spirit of material and scientific conquest. As a result, the White race was conquering the world and spreading over vast continents in the Americas, Australia, and even Africa. In that context, Darwin believed human evolution would continue, including through the extermination of ‘lower’ races. The following quote, Darwin considers Whites to be at the apex of human evolution (with room for improvement), with Africans and Australian aborigines as the least civilized:

At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes . . . will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, as some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian[8] and the gorilla. (183-4)

Darwin urges us to understand the inexorable tendency towards the extinction of certain races as an inevitable consequence of even slight fertility differentials:

Though the difficulty is great to our imagination, and really great, if we wish to ascertain the precise causes and their manner of action, it ought not to be so to our reason, as long as we keep steadily in mind that the increase of each species and each race is constantly checked in various ways; so that if any new check, even a slight one, be superadded, the race will surely decrease in number; and decreasing numbers will sooner or later lead to extinction; the end, in most cases, being promptly determined by the inroads of conquering tribes. (222)

I'm going to create a blogpost equating the racial hierarchy* in Brazil to the racial hierarchy in Hawaii - a similar phenomenon is occurring in Hawaii where those Hawaiians with more European DNA and/or more Asian DNA are attaining higher socioeconomic status than Hawaiians with DNA of other racial groups or Hawaiians with a greater percentage of Hawaiian DNA just as Brazilians with a preponderance of European or Asian genes have the highest status and greatest wealth in that country.
(SEE

*A native Hawaiian racial hierarchy is developing. Those part Hawaiians with more European ancestry or more East Asian ancestry (Japanese and Chinese in particular) are at the top of that hierarchy. Beneath these subcategories are Hawaiians with a higher percentage of Filipino DNA, Hawaiians with a higher percentage of Samoan DNA, and Hawaiians with a higher percentage of Micronesian DNA. At the bottom of this hierarchy are the Puerto Rican-Hawaiian admixtures, the black-Hawaiian admixtures, and the few remaining Hawaiians with 100% to 75% Hawaiian DNA.

Native Hawaiians in Hawaii are the equivalent of Blacks in the contiguous 48 states in the sense that they rank the lowest in socioeconomic status and thus the lowest in measured quality of life - the highest poverty rate, the highest unemployment rate, the highest homeless rate, the highest crime rate, the highest incarceration rate, etc.

"...the poorer the ingroup, the more it uses group narcissism as a form of compensation...The larger the group, the weaker the narcissistic gratification that individuals obtain by identifying with it, the less cohesive the group bonds, and the more likely individuals are to identify with smaller groups inside the group..." (On Human Nature. p. 163)
And like NIGGERs, modern, racially admixed Native Hawaiians display a high level of ethnic group narcissism. What are indications of a high degree of ethnic group narcissism? I'll tell you shortly.

People Are People So...(Deepak Moded)

Keep in mind, though, that once we began migrating and spreading out, different groups of humans lived (for tens of thousands of years) in sometimes radically different environments from one another. Some areas were hot, some were cold, and some were replete with certain pathogens, while others were not. Despite living in ecologies that were often quite different from one another, most researchers maintain that evolution simply works too slowly for any of this to matter (i.e., for natural selection to sculpt differences [especially psychological differences] across groups). It is true that evolution is a slow process, yet “slow” is a relative term. A stretch of 10,000 years (for example) is pretty brief evolutionarily, but is it enough time to make noticeable evolutionary changes in a population of humans?

Yes, it is.

The example most often trotted out to make this point has to do with the seemingly banal topic of dairy consumption; specifically, the ability to digest milk from birth until death. Many humans cannot, in fact, do this, as it requires the continued production of an enzyme beyond early childhood. The mutation that enabled lactose tolerance across the life span seems to have appeared sometime in the last 10,000 years. Natural selection would end up favoring the mutation; individuals who carried the gene were more reproductively successful (on average) than those who did not. Thus, the gene became more prevalent in some populations of humans relative to others. This type of rapid biological adaptation is important for a host of reasons; but in this case, it’s relevant because it pushes around our notions of what natural selection can do in a given (short) stretch of time.

The “Looming Crisis” That Lies Beyond the Dairy Cow

Make no mistake, evolutionary changes like the capability for lifetime dairy consumption are important occurrences in their own right, but these changes beg an obvious question. Should we assume that natural selection has only affected genes related to drinking milk (or skin pigmentation and resistance to certain types of disease)? For this to be true, it would have to mean that natural selection somehow managed to ignore our central nervous system (CNS) and, by extension, genes that are connected (directly and indirectly) to human personality and temperament. Temperamental and psychological traits are strongly related to survival and reproductive success in humans, moreover. Even slight differences in psychological propensities (being slightly more or less impulsive, or slightly more of less inclined to seek out new experiences, for example) might have had large effects on the survival and reproduction of our ancestors in the different environments they encountered.

What would be convenient at this point is if I could point you to five traits—or even one—and be able to say with a high degree of certainty that this trait differs across racial or ethnic groups because those groups encountered different selection pressures across the history of our species. One could certainly try and speak definitively, but it would still only amount to informed speculation, as the empirical jury is still out at this juncture. Some titillating possibilities exist, nonetheless, including the cognitive differences between Ashkenazi Jewish individuals and other ethnic groups. Some researchers have argued that the high IQ of Ashkenazi Jewish people — relative to other groups — is at least partially genetically caused, owing to intense selection pressures for intellectual capacity over the last several thousand years. Gregory Cochran, Jason Hardy, and Henry Harpending, specifically, have written on the topic. Yet, much more research is required.

...

Given the rapid pace with which we know biological evolution can take place, the vastly different environments that humans encountered across the course of our history, and the unlikelihood that natural selection would skip over traits that were psychological and temperamental in nature, it’s simply a reasonable bet that some of the differences that emerge across human groups have been at least partly shaped by natural selection. Miller makes a final point, however, that resonates with a theme embedded in the start of the essay, and in part I.

15. The criticism here from evolutionary psychologists is that there just wasn't enough time to evolve novel mental modules. True. But this is more about tweaking and adjusting than about creating entirely new modules.

https://twitter.com/EPoe187/status/1142720946354163712
Evolutionary psychology’s biggest mistake was a strong version of the universal human nature thesis. There are human natures, not a human nature.

5. This strongly implies that any behavioral (i.e., psychological) evolution during the terminal Pleistocene & Holocene would also be *population-specific*. In other words, it would result in innate psychological differences between populations, the very basis of race science!

ONE OF THE MANY THINGS THAT SEPARATES US FROM OTHER ANIMALS IS OUR HIGHLY ADVANCED CULTURE (OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM, LEGAL SYSTEM, SOCIAL SYSTEM, ECONOMIC SYSTEM, TECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEM, ETC.) AND BECAUSE OF THIS IT'S EASY TO ASSUME THAT WE'RE UNLIKE OTHER ANIMALS. BUT UNDERLYING THIS CULTURE IS OUR BIOLOGICAL MAKEUP AND LIKE ALL OTHER ANIMALS IT'S THIS BIOLOGICAL MAKEUP THAT DICTATES OUR THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS. SO YOU MAY READ MY WRITING IN REGARD TO COURTING, MATING, VIOLENCE, AND WHAT HAVE YOU AND THINK TO YOURSELVES, "NO, WE DON'T DO THAT. THAT'S WHAT ANIMALS DO. WE'RE HUMANS. WE'RE ABOVE THAT." BUT YOU'RE WRONG. YOU'RE IN DENIAL. YOU'RE FOOLING YOURSELVES. YOU'RE LYING TO YOURSELVES. AND YOU'RE UNLEARNED. BECAUSE WE ARE ANIMALS AND LIKE ALL ANIMALS WE'RE DRIVEN BY THE SAME MOTIVES THAT OTHER ANIMALS IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM ARE DRIVEN BY (NAMELY, SURVIVAL AND REPRODUCTION) AND WE ATTAIN THESE GOALS IN SIMILAR WAYS (WE USE SIMILAR STRATEGIES AND TACTICS AS OTHER ANIMALS TO GAIN STATUS, GAIN WEALTH (RESOURCES), GAIN ALLIES, GAIN MATES, ETC.). AFTER ALL, WE EVOLVED THROUGH NATURAL AND SEXUAL SELECTION TO THINK AND BEHAVE THIS WAY JUST LIKE ALL OTHER ANIMALS!

The overarching insight of the book is that contrary to popular belief, the rise of “civilization” did not result in the extinction of humans as animals subject to biological evolution and the emergence of a species which had untethered itself from the truisms of nature.  In fact as evident in the subheading Cochran & Harpending argue that contrary to the conventional wisdom civilization has increased the rate of evolutionary change.  There is no mystery if you assume that evolutionary change is somehow related to the change in a population’s environment, and human culture can be considered our species’ environment. At its most simple level all that is required for evolution are changes in the frequencies of genetic variants over time; this may be prevented by selective forces which constrain variation, but constancy has not been a feature of human history over the past 10,000 years. Add to this Cochran & Harpending’s insight that larger populations have more variation, like a more diverse palette for a painter, and one can see how the creative energies of evolution might be unleashed among on humans.

"But this has no bearing whatsoever on whether dividing humanity up into breeding populations that differ genetically from other populations as a result of geographical isolation, cultural separation, and endogamy, and which show patterns of genotypic
frequency for a number of inter-correlated characteristics compared with other breeding populations (the essence of ‘race’) allows correct predictions to be made. If so doing does allow correct predictions to be made, then ‘race’ is as much a ‘scientific’ category as any other.

Wade says that these probabilistic differences have emerged because of “soft sweeps” in evolution. A “hard sweep” consists of a new mutation creating a trait that confers a decisive advantage that causes it to take over a population. In contrast, a soft sweep takes place when a trait has an advantage, and this trait is caused by many genes. People with more of the favorable genes for producing that trait will tend to have more surviving children. Says Wade,

The soft sweep process—a small increase in frequency in many genes—is a much easier way for natural selection to operate than through hard sweeps.

The practice of breeding plants and animals relies on soft sweeps rather than hard sweeps. The breeder of tame animals does not know which genes are at work. However, by selecting the tamest animals in each generation, the breeder eventually creates a breed that has a large share of the genes that favor tameness.

When do different gene clusters emerge through selection pressure and when do they emerge at random? This question occurred to me throughout my reading of Wade’s book, and I did not find it clearly addressed. Perhaps the answer is well known, and I simply lack the relevant background knowledge.

On the one hand, I can imagine differences that are due to selection pressure, which would work somewhat like deliberate breeding. Selection pressures that differ by location could cause humans to evolve different traits in different locations. Wade offers well-known examples, such as genes for lactose tolerance or genes that help fight malaria but otherwise have adverse consequences.

On the other hand, I also can imagine random variation in gene clusters. The random genetic characteristics of any two populations would tend to differ, on average, in proportion to the distance between those two populations. That is because people are less likely to marry the farther apart they live. It seems to me that this could give rise to distinct genetic markers of a particular continent or even of a particular town. However, such variation might have no significant impact on the traits of the people with those differences, because it does not reflect selection pressure.

Race is NOT a social construct. Your DNA can tell people what race you are. That is how forensic science reads bones and blood. Race is real. It is very real. Your bones, with no other context, would still say you are Black.
The social construct of race reliably aligns with genetic groupings in the U.S. For ~97% of people, if you have their genetic data, you can correctly impute their self-reported race.

"Race realism is discomfiting because it contradicts contemporary dogmas about human equality. Races...are not the same. And because they are not the same, they will create slightly different cultures and have different social outcomes."
Over a 150 years later, intellectuals still have not accepted the Darwinian revolution. Its central message is too ruinous to sacred values: Variation is the rule in nature, among individuals, sexes, and populations. Humans, in other words, are not equal.

Human Populations (Races) Evolved In Different Geographic (Topographic), Climatic, Cultural, And Social Environments And These Environments Exerted Natural, Sexual, And Group Selective Pressures On Them (The People Inhabiting Them) Resulting In The Different Anatomical, Physiological, And Psychological Characteristics That We See Among The Descendants Of These Populations Today. It's A Very Simple Concept To Grasp, Jane (How Racial Differences In Intelligence And Other Personality Traits Evolved Among Races) And I'm Sure You Grasp It, But You're Unable To Believe It's Veracity And Accept It As Fact Because You're Deluded And Want To Remain In Fantasy Land (i.e. Believe That We Were All Created Equal And That The Only Differences Between People And Populations Are Cultural Differences). David Reich, a leading scientist in population genetics (an area of science well positioned to investigate the biological basis of race), says: “Differences in genetic ancestry that happen to correlate to many of today’s racial constructs are real.”

Finally, Coyne writes: “The 'sociological constructs' thing is simply political correctness imposed on biological reality. In view of the morphological and genetic differences among human populations, how can such differences be 'constructs'?”

The differencess between populations are not minuscule & largely irrelevant. They matter. Some populations can, in nature, thrive at high altitude, others can't. Some can thrive in under low insulation, others can't. Some can resist many tropical parasites. Others can't.

The more loci you look at, the more reliably you can classify people in ways that match everyday ideas of "race" (and this reliability is very high):

It's because the racial classifications are an accurate reflection of ancestry. If it weren't, the finding of that study would be impossible.

When I ask my students what they think of black people, they express mixed results depending on sex. The girls often react with disgust, revulsion, or pity. They use terms such as “ugly,” “black skin,” “weird hair,” “smelly,” “loud,” and “flat nose.” Part of this has to do with Chinese standards of beauty, which value a prominent or “high nose,” “three dimensional face,” “light skin,” and “double eyelids” (a skin crease above the eyes like that of whites). The Chinese perception of beauty is almost the exact opposite of the way blacks look.
The girls’ disgust is often combined with fear, and they associate blacks with crime. This gut attitude from Chinese girls can be perplexing because it arises from those who have often never met a black person, or have seen them only in passing. It seems to me this association of black people with danger and violence is almost innate for Chinese people, especially women. I’ve also noticed that black African young men have absolutely no luck trying to date Chinese girls, who see them as weird, ugly, and aggressive.
This contrasts sharply with Chinese girls’ typical reaction to whites. From my own observation, and from what I hear from others, they practically throw themselves at white guys. In our class introductions at the beginning of the semester, I usually have at least four or five ask if I will date them—they flirt with me right in front of the class. Many more make advances privately.

I WONDER HOW LONG IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN BEFORE THE 3 MAJOR RACES (NEGROID, CAUCASOID, MONGOLOID) BECAME DISTINCT SPECIES THAT WERE UNABLE TO BREED WITH ONE ANOTHER. 60,000 YEARS SEPARATE EUROPEANS FROM AFRICANS AND 40,000 YEARS SEPARATE EUROPEANS FROM ASIANS, BUT ALL 3 RACES CAN STILL BREED WITH ONE ANOTHER! I THINK I'M GOING TO AX GREGORY COCHRAN THIS!

In other words, genetic differences among, at least, the traditionally recognized human races, such as Europeans, East Asians, and sub-Saharan Africans, are large enough that genetic analyses need to be performed on each race separately to be satisfactorily accurate enough.

https://robertlindsay.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/the-birth-of-the-caucasian-race/
The next major fork in the human family tree occurred between the populations that colonized the two major halves of the Eurasian continent. Migrants to the north became the ancestors of Caucasians in the west and of East Asians in the east. Caucasians include Europeans, Middle Easterners and the people of the Indian subcontinent. The term Caucasian is avoided by some anthropologists because Blumenbach, who invented the term, believed the inhabitants of the Caucasus were the world's most beautiful people. But Blumenbach, as noted earlier, did not believe Caucasians were superior to other races. Because there is no other word to refer to this important grouping of populations, many geneticists use this term. The date of the split between East Asians and Caucasians is still uncertain but may have been as long as 30,000 years ago.

Both Caucasians and East Asians have light skin, an adaptation to living in high northern latitudes. The default state of primate skin is pale: chimpanzees, under their fur, have white skin (although their faces are dark because of heavy suntan). When our distant ancestors lost their fur, probably because bare skin allowed better sweating and heat control, they developed dark skin to protect a vital chemical known as folic acid from being destroyed by the strong ultraviolet light around the equator. The first modern humans who migrated to the northern latitudes of Europe and Asia were exposed to much less ultraviolet light - too little, in fact, to synthesize enough vitamin D, for which ultraviolet light is required. Natural selection therefore favored the development of pale skin among people living in high northern latitudes. Pale skin may also have been prized in sexual partners, in which case sexual selection, as well as the need to synthesize vitamin D, would have speeded the spread of the necessary alleles. Objectively speaking, pale skin is no more attractive than any other shade. If anything, it is probably less so, to judge by the existence of tanning salons. It could have been prized for arbitrary reasons or, given its association with vitamin D synthesis, because its owners had healthier children in extreme northern latitudes.

Pale skin evolved independently in the Caucasian and East Asian populations, showing that the two populations have remained substantially separated since their split. This is known to be the case because pale skin in Caucasians is caused by a largely different set of genes than those that cause pale skin in East Asians. The independent but parallel evolution of pale skin in the two halves of the Eurasian continent came about because each was exposed to the same stress - the need to protect vitamin D synthesis in northern latitudes. But natural selection can work only with whatever alleles - the different versions of a gene - are present in a population. Evidently different alleles for making pale skin were available in the Caucasian and East Asian populations. This is not so surprising. Making, packaging and distributing the granules of pigment that give skin its color is a complex process, and there are many ways it can be tweaked so as to yield a particular outcome.

Among Africans, dark skin is maintained by the gene known as MC1R. A single version of this gene is found throughout Africa, whereas at least 30 alleles, all different from the African allele, are found among Europeans, and other variants are special to East Asians. It seems that any mutations or changes in the African allele of MC1R lead to lighter skin, which is harmful in the African context. Carriers of such an allele in Africa have no or fewer children, and the variant versions of the MC1R gene that keep cropping up because of mutation are constantly eliminated by purifying selection.

Europeans have pale skin in part because purifying selection on their MC1R gene has been relaxed. But this is not the only reason. They have several alleles that promote pale skin. One is an allele of the gene known as SLC24A5. The SLC24A5 gene specifies a large protein - a chain of amino acid unites - in which the 11th unit is the amino acid known as alanine. This is the ancestral form of the gene and is the allele found in almost all Africans and East Asians. Almost all Europeans have an allele in which there is a critical difference in the triplet of three consecutive DNA bases, known as a codon, that specifies the 111th amino acid unit. Different codons determine the 20 kinds of amino acid unit of which proteins are composed. In the case of the SLC24A5 gene, the 111th codon in the ancestral allele is the triplet of bases ACA, which specifies the amino acid alanine. In Europeans, the first A in the triplet has mutated to a G, giving the sequence GCA, and this codon specifies the amino acid known as threonine. This single switch of amino acids alters the function of the protein.

Almost all Europeans have two copies (one from each parent) of the threonine-denoting, skin-lightening allele of the SLC24A5 gene. Africans have two copies of the alanine allele that darkens the skin. African Americans and African Caribbeans who have one copy of each allele have intermediate hues of skin.

East Asians have skin that can be just as pale as that of Europeans. But East Asians carry the ancestral dark skin form of SLC24A5. Natural selection has found other routes by which to lighten the skin of East Asians.

https://westhunt.wordpress.com/2017/12/19/how-to-be-different/

Several other differences are already known between East Asians and Europeans, testifying to the ancient split between the populations. One is the greater thickness of East Asian hair. Africans and Europeans, who have thin hair shafts, carry the same version of a gene called EDAR. A different allele is widespread in East Asians, occurring in 93% of Han Chinese, about 70% of people in Japan and Thailand, and in 60 to 90% of Native Americans. In the 370th codon of the gene, a T has mutated to C, so that the amino acid coded for is alanine instead of valine. Because of the switch of valine (V) to alanine (A) at the 370th codon, the allele is called EDAR-V370A.

East Asians who carry the EDAR-V370A allele also have thick and lustrous hair. But correlation is not proof, so how can one be certain that EDAR-V370A is indeed the cause of East Asians' thick hair shafts? Researchers who wished to prove this point recently generated a strain of mice whose EDAR gene was converted to the East Asian form. They found the mice had thicker hair, proving that the allele is the cause of thick hair in East Asians, but also noticed two other interesting changes.

First, the mice had more eccrine sweat glands than usual in their foot pads. Sweat glands come in two versions, eccrine glands, which secrete water so as to cool the body by evaporation, and apocrine glands, which secrete proteins and hormones. Checking in a Chinese population, the researchers found that the EDAR-V370A causes people too to carry significantly more eccrine glands, a fact that had been previously unknown.

The mice also had smaller breasts than usual, indicating that the EDAR-V370A allele is probably the reason why East Asian women tend to have smaller breasts than African and European women.

A fourth probable effect of EDAR-V370A is that it causes the characteristic dentition of East Asians, whose front teeth look shovel shaped when seen from the back. The mice were less useful in elucidating this effect because their teeth are so different from human teeth.

It may seem surprising that a single gene can have so many profound effects. EDAR has great influence on the body because it is switched on early in embryonic development and helps shape organs such as the skin, teeth, hair, and breasts.

The fact that the EDAR-V370A allele has so many effects in East Asians raises the intriguing question of which particular effect was the target of natural selection that made the allele so common. One possibility is that thick hair and small breasts were much admired by Asian men, or equally that thick hair in either sex was attractive to the other. In either case, these traits would have been acting as agents of sexual selection, a particularly potent form of natural selection.

Another possibility is that the sweat glands were the driving force behind the rise of EDAR-V370A. East Asians are usually assumed to have evolved in a cold climate because of certain traits, such as narrow nostrils and a fold of fat over the eyelid, which seem helpful in conserving body heat. But researchers have calculated that the EDAR variant emerged some 35,000 years ago, at which time central China was hot and humid.

A third possibility is that many or all of the effects of EDAR-V370A were advantageous at one time or another, and that natural selection favored each in turn. Effects of less obvious advantage, such as the shaping of the teeth, were dragged along in the wake of the traits found favorable by natural selection.

EDAR-V370A explains a substantial part, but not all, of the physiological differences between East Asians and other races. Another feature that distinguishes most East Asians from Europeans and Africans has to do with earwax. The substance comes in two forms, wet and dry. The switch between the two types is controlled by two alleles of the gene ABCC11. The allele that causes dry earwax is very common in East Asia. Among the northern Han Chinese and Koreans, 100% of people have the dry allele. The percentage drops to 85% among the southern Han and to 87% in Japan.

Almost all Europeans and all Africans have the wet earwax allele of the ABCC11 gene. This sharp differentiation of the two alleles implies a strong selection pressure. But the function of earwax, like flypaper, is merely to deter insects from crawling into the ear. It seems unlikely that so minor a role would be critical to survival. But as it happens, the two alleles of the ABCC11 are also involved in the apocrine sweat glands.

Unlike the eccrine sweat glands mentioned above, which are found all over the body and secrete just water, the apocrine glands in humans are restricted after birth to just the armpits, nipples, eyelids and other special niches. They make slightly oily secretions, and the specialty of those in the ear is to secrete earwax. The apocrine gland secretions are odorless at first but produce body odor after being decomposed by the bacteria ubiquitous on the skin.

East Asians with the dry earwax allele of the gene produce fewer secretions from their apocrine glands and as a result have less body odor. Among people spending many months in confined spaces to escape the cold, lack of body odor would have been an attractive trait and one perhaps favored by sexual selection.

Yet another East Asian characteristic is the type of skull known by physical anthropologists as Mongoloid. Mongoloid skulls have fine features, a broad head shape, and flattened faces. They also have a distinctive dentition. Africans and Europeans have the same kind of generic human teeth, which is evidently the ancestral pattern. In the East a new tooth pattern emerged, called sundadonty after Sunda, the Ice Age continent that disintegrated after the rise of sea level into Malaysia and the islands of Indonesia. Southeast Asians and the populations derived from them in Polynesia are sundadonts. Some 30,000 years ago, a variation of sundadonty appeared called sinodonty, in which the upper incisors are shovel shaped and some molar teeth have extra roots. Northern Chinese, Japanese and Native Americans, who are descended from Siberian populations, are all sinodonts.

Politically oriented scientists often proclaim that there are no distinct human races, seeking to imply, without actually saying so, that races do not exist. One reason that races exist, though not distinctly, is that features characteristic of a race are often distributed along a gradient. Almost all northern Chinese have the sinodont pattern of dentition, but the farther one goes toward southern China and Southeast Asia, the greater the percentage of people who are sundadonts and the fewer who are sinodonts. The dry earwax allele is almost universal in northern China but yields to the wet allele toward the south. Most East Asians have the dry earwax gene, but not all do. Most, but not all, have the EDAR-V370A allele.

All these differences are variations superimposed on the common human theme. Even small differences in appearance can be of great social significance, given the strong human tendency to distinguish between the in-group and the out-group. Like the minor variations of language known as dialects, variations in skin or hair color can form the basis on which one group distinguishes itself from its neighbors. If intermarriage then ceases to occur across this fault line, other differences will accumulate, pushing human populations toward differentiation and away from remixing into a common genetic pool.
