Animal breeders have readily produced aggressive and pacific strains of various animals, including mice, rats, and dogs. Although we don't know exactly how temperaments are genetically defined, and although each individual's experience also effects his or her temperament, we have every reason to think that genes significantly influence the development and maintenance of aggression in all animals, partly because aggressive behavior is increased by the action of testosterone on the brain. And just as nonaggressive strains of other animals can be breed by artificial selection, so a peaceful strain of human could be bred, too. With some concerted worldwide action we could probably get measurable results within a few generations. Society could, through its own reproductive choices, actually breed a kinder, gentler man - with a temperament less like a chimpanzee's, more like a bonobo's.
Well, obviously it wouldn't work. Persuading the more violent men to abandon hopes of fatherhood would doubtless keep prison builders happy and, in the end, probably engender revolution. But even if the most aggressive, potentially violent men could be persuaded to step aside for the sake of future generations, what about the women? Women's evolved strategic responses to male demonism have included countermeasures and defiance, but they have also included collaboration. That is to say, while men have evolved to be demonic males, it seems likely that women have evolved to prefer demonic males (or imitation demonic males) as mates. This inclination makes good sense in evolutionary terms for two reasons. First, the demonic male is the one who tends to protect the female best from violence by other males and thus keeps her and her offspring safe. And second, as long as demonic males are the most successful reproducers, any female who mates with them is provided with sons who themselves will likely be good reproducers.
In real-life terms this means almost nothing about individual women and individual choices. It does not necessarily mean that women in general prefer the most violent males. It certainly does not mean that women in general like criminals. It decidedly does not mean that women choose to be the victims of male violence. It merely makes sense of the fact that women are inclined to some degree to find attractive some of the marks of male demonism. The marks could be as unsubtle and artificial as the exaggerated body armor pumper up by an ambitious Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose comic book caricature of the demonic male physique and persona appeals to the fantasies of both men and women. Or the marks could be as disturbing and ultimately dangerous as the blustering brutality of Rhett Butler in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind.
The football star is admired, even loved when he demonstrates his power and controlled violence on the field, but he is expected, somehow, to turn off those very qualities and abilities in every other situation. Should we be surprised when a champion hockey player turns out to be a rapist, when a great football player is shown to be a wife beater? Or should we instead be amazed at the human capacity for self-control, for channeling impulse and inclination that enables most other hockey and football stars to confine their terrific capacity for mayhem to the ice or astroturf? Many women would prefer otherwise, but in the real world, the tough guys finds himself besieged with female admirers, while the self-effacing friend sadly clutches his glass of Chablis at the fern bar alone. The individual men and women who make up our species are extraordinarily ready to admire, to love, and to reward male demonism in many of its manifestations; and that admiration, love, and rewarding perpetuates the continuation, for generation after generation, of the demonic male within us.
Women don't ask for abuse. Women don't like many specific acts of demonic males. But paradoxically, many women do regularly find attractive the cluster of qualities and behaviors - successful aggression, dominance and displays of dominance - associated with male demonism. Both men and women are active participants in the very system that nurtures the continued success of demonic males; and the knot of human evolution, with the demonic male at center, requires an untying of both strands, male and female.

WE are now conscious of why WE do the things WE do (at least those of US who are educated and have a background in the social sciences). It (science) has given US greater insight into our motives, desires, and intentions and made US aware of how these drives and emotions evolved and why WE now use them. This is unprecedented in the history of the human species. For millenia WE acted purely on instincts and social rules, but had no understanding of the impact and effects of our behaviors.
Accordingly, WE evolved genes that predisposed US to be partial to and in some cases, favor immoral and unethical acts. And for millenia WE bred with those that were the best at acting on these instincts while staying within the confines of society. Now, these same genes draw US to "bad boys" and bad, yet economically, socially and sexually beneficial behavior. But because WE are now in a position to fully comprehend and be conscious of our motives, desires, and intentions, WE should shun them.
WE should shun the "bad boy" because WE know why we're drawn to them and WE know the negative effects they have on society and, more importantly, the negative long term genetic effects of the human species. Their genes should not be perpetuated, but rather removed from the human genome completely.
Ultimately, females are the final arbitrators of the direction the human species goes. They determine whether aggressive, violent, deceptive, manipulative, conniving, disloyal, etc. (essentially immoral and unethical) behavior is rewarded (rewarded at the reproductive level, in which a male's genes for this behavior is allowed to be passed on to the female's offspring).
