*After Speck's death, Dr. Jan E. Leestma, a neuropathologist at the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery, performed an autopsy of Speck's brain. Leestma found apparent gross abnormalities. Two areas of the brain — the hippocampus, which involves memory, and the amygdala, which deals with rage and other strong emotions — encroached upon each other, and their boundaries were blurred. Leestma made tissue section slides and presented them to others, who agreed his findings were unusual. There was no further analysis, however; the tissue samples were lost or stolen when sent to a Boston neurologist for further study. Leestma's findings were inconclusive.

Dr. John R. Hughes, a neurologist and longtime director of the Epilepsy Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and a colleague of Leestma, examined photos of the tissue in the 1990s along with brain wave tests performed on Speck in the 1960s. Hughes stated, "I have never heard of that [type of abnormality] in the history of neurology. So any abnormality that exceptional has got to have an exceptional consequence." Hughes attributes Speck's homicidal nature to a combination of the brain abnormalities, the violence Speck suffered at the hands of his alcoholic stepfather, and his own drinking and violence in Texas.

After Speck died, his body was not claimed. Duane Krieger, Will County coroner when Speck died, said he had talked to Richard Speck's sister: "She said they were afraid people would desecrate the grave if they had him buried out there." Krieger also stated that the sister "told her kids, 'You can never tell people Richard Speck was your uncle.'"

In some mammal species, social stress can disrupt normal testis function. An experimental study of treeshrews conducted by behavioral physiologist Dietrich von Holst revealed extreme effects. When two males are caged together, one becomes dominant over the other within a few hours and the subordinate male increasingly shows symptoms of stress. As exposure to the dominant continues, the effects become progressively more severe. One early response is retraction of the testes from the scrotum back into the belly cavity. If the dominant male is removed, the testes quickly return to the scrotum and no lasting harm is done. Longer-lasting testis retraction shuts down sperm production, and actual physical decay of the testes eventually follows - the submissive male is emasculated.

But if scientific parsimony prevails, and I think it should, such philosophical positioning becomes embarrassingly like grasping at straws. The facts of the evolutionary case imply strongly that God's existence is rather improbable.  As Yale University psychologist Paul Bloom writes, the driving force behind natural selection is survival and reproduction, not truth. All other things being equal, it is better for an animal to believe true things than false things; accurate perception is better than hallucination. But sometimes all other things are not equal. Owing to the distorting lens of our evolved theory of mind - distortions that warp our perception of reality in systematic, predictable ways because they served our ancestors' genetic interests - we know now that what feels real...is not always a good measure of what is real. The Cognitive Illusion of an ever-present and keenly observant God worked for our genes, and that's reason enough for nature to have kept the illusion vividly alive in human brains.

 The study also found that from 2007 to 2012, the percentage of people in South L.A. who were obese or overweight increased from 63% to 75%, while the obesity rate in the rest of the county increased from 57% to 58%. Otis Wright, a minister at West Los Angeles Church of God in Christ, sat in a corner of a Burger King in Baldwin Hills on Wednesday afternoon with two buddies, sipping coffee and chowing down on chicken nuggets. Wright said he was unaware of the fast-food restriction but said he was not surprised that the data raised questions about its effect on the health of residents. He said critics fail to see the time-saving role that fast-food restaurants play in this working-class community.

"It's a convenient way to eat when you are moving around — conducting business and for a quick dinner," he said. "It might not be the most nutritional, but it's fast and cheap."

Wright said he frequents fast-food restaurants several times a week because they provide a clean environment and allow him to have leisurely conversations.

"They are wholesome and fill a spot," he said.

While were on the general subject of animal ancestry, one of the more creative accounts of the relationship between sex and disgust in human beings comes from the field of "terror management theory," which postulates that any disgust reactions we have to sex actually stem from the fear of our own mortality. Sex is so corporeal, or bodily, the argument goes, that it's a uniquely powerful reminder of  our animal nature. And just like other animals we've got one-way tickets to Decomposition Central, which is a very scary place to us. It's so scary, terror management theorists claim, that if our brains were to dwell on this reality for too long, we'd become so paralyzed with fear that we'd no longer be able to function adaptively. Human beings coped with their awareness of death, these scholars believe, by inventing various cultural expressions of immortality to quell their existential fright. (All of this is presumably happening subconsciously, mind you.) And by the looks of it, the idea of sex presents some big challenges to our species in this uncomfortably mortal regard.

In one study, for instance, having people contemplate their own deaths caused them to favor a definition of sex in its more lofty, abstract forms (such as "love making" rather than "copulating"). Concepts like love and romance are said to be "symbolically immortal," helping to return the individual to a more manageable state of death anxiety. Presumably, this is why we're so enamored of slogans such as "A diamond is forever" and why poetic lines like Emily Dickinson's "Unable are the Loved to die / For Love is Immortality" strike a true and universal chord. Compare those maudlin sentiments with Shakespeare's lurid metaphor for sex in Othello as "making the beast with two backs" or his describing a couple as "prime as goats" and "hot as monkeys." You'd find Shakespeare's language here especially gross, the argument goes, right after being told you've got an inoperable brain tumor and have only a few months to live. Like another famous theory that's based on subconscious anxieties, it has its limits, but I think there's probably something to terror management theory. It could explain Rick Santorum believing gay marriage is a stone's throw away from interspecies marriage, anyway. That poor man - the mere act of ejaculating, reminding him that he's an animal, must be so existentially terrifying to him. (PERV)

Their Rationale Confirms The Fact That Belief In God And The Practicing Of Religion (Superstition) Comes Naturally To Humans (Our Minds Are Biased To Think This Way) While Science Is Contrary To How We Evolved To Arrive At Answers And Contrary To What Our Minds Evolved To Believe. With Science You Have To Override Your Innate Psychological Tendencies (Adaptations) To Reach Answers That Are Not In Accordance With What Your Mind Wants You To Believe And Most People Can't And Don't Want To Do This.
