One final attribute of attraction reminds us how simple desire can be: men like women who are interested in them. But how does a man recognize this interest? He may be tipped off by a seemingly trivial sign. When a women is genuinely excited by a man, her pupils tend to dilate, sometimes becoming enormous.

In several studies, psychologists toyed with men's emotions by manipulating this unusually honest signal. Men were approached and asked to participate in a psychology study (not realizing that they already were participating in one). Half of the female recruiters, it turns out, had their pupils enlarged with eye drops before approaching any men. The other half were working with their normal-sized pupils.

The result? Men volunteered in droves when the recruiters' pupils had been enlarged. Similarly, when photographs are altered to enlarge the pupils, men significantly increase their rating of the subject's beauty. (Mean Genes)

The typical description of ideal beauty always goes "blonde, blue eyes." After Marlowe proposed a solution for the mystery of why men prefer women with large breasts, the attraction to blue eyes remained the only mystery to solve in the area of traits associated with physical attractiveness. We now knew why men preferred women with all the traits that characterize Barbie or a typical blonde bombshell, and we knew the evolutionary logic behind each of them. But eye color, more so than hair color, seems such an arbitrary trait. Why should women with blue eyes be any different from those with green or brown eyes? Yet a preference for blue eyes seems both universal and undeniable.

There is an additional layer to the mystery of blue eyes. Unlike all the other traits discussed above, which are considered to be attractive only for women, blue eyes are thought to be attractive for both women and men. For instance, a typical description of an attractive man is "tall, dark, and handsome," not blonde; unlike blonde women, blonde men are not universally considered to be attractive (because women generally prefer to mate with older, not younger, men). Yet, as the examples of Frank Sinatra ("Ol' Blue Eyes") and Paul Newman show, men with blue eyes are considered to be attractive, just like women with blue eyes. So it appears that the answer to the question , "Why are blue eyes attractive?" must involve more than male sexual preference.

The attraction of blue eyes remained an evolutionary mystery until an undergraduate student, Lee Anne Turney, suggested a novel solution in her term paper for a class that she took from one of us (Kanazawa) in Spring 2002. As far as we know, hers is the only available explanation for the attraction of blue eyes that anyone has ever proposed, and it has at least surface plausibility. But, of course, it will have to be subjected to rigorous experimental testing before it can become an excepted explanation.

Turney points out that the human pupil dilates when an individual is exposed to something that he or she likes. For instance, the pupils of women and infants (but not men) spontaneously dilate when they see babies. Thus, pupil dilation, which is usually beyond an individual's conscious volitional control, can be used as an honest indicator of interest and attraction. Most people are not even aware that the size of their pupils changes when they see something they like, so it would be difficult to deceive others by consciously manipulating their pupil size. We cannot help but reveal our interest in and attraction to others through the size of our pupils.

Turney then makes two simple observations.  First, every human pupil is dark brown, regardless of the color of the iris, which encloses the pupil and determines the color of the eye. Second, blue is the lightest color of human iris. The consequence of these two observations is that the size of the pupil is easiest to determine in blue eyes. If you face people with different eye colors and must determine whether each person likes or is interested in you, with all else equal, it is easiest to read the blue-eyed person's level of interest or attraction. Turney's argument, which we believe might be true, is that blue-eyed people are considered attractive as potential mates because it is easiest to determine whether they are interested in us or not. It is easier to "read the minds" of people with blue eyes than of those with eyes of any other color, at least when it comes to interest of attraction.

One of the advantages of Turney's solution is that it not only explains why blue eyes are considered to be ideal in mates but also explains why, unlike all other traits we discuss in this section, blue eyes are considered to be attractive in both sexes. It is just as important for women to read men's minds as it is for men to read women's; if anything, given the far great consequences of making mistakes by being attracted to the "wrong" person, women should have a greater need to decide whether their potential mate's seeming interest in them is genuine or not. The negative consequences of being fooled by a lying suitor are much greater for women, so blue eyes should be a more important characteristic in men than in women. 

Incidentally, we believe that Turney's logic can also explain why people with dark brown eyes are often considered to be "mysterious." They are mysterious because their minds - that is, whether or not they are interested in or attracted to us - are more difficult to assess. The color of the dark brown iris is very similar to the (universal) color of the pupil, and so it is very difficult to gauge the size of the pupil in dark brown eyes. Many people, both men and women, express dislike for extremely dark brown eyes.

Living Africans have alleles that chimpanzees and gorillas have, but Eurasians do not have. (Deka, 1995). This fact may, however, show not that Africans are older than Eurasians, but that they did not evolve as much as Eurasians – a population that begins in the tropics and stays there will not evolve as much as a population that begins in the tropics and slowly moves north into a temperate zone.

If a population has the same alleles that the great apes have, and other populations do not have those alleles, then that population is more primitive. Genetics has just begun to determine the distribution of different alleles among people across the Earth, but the use of chimpanzee and gorilla alleles to identify Africans as the “ancestral” population (i.e., Africans have alleles that chimps and gorillas have, but Eurasians do not have) is widespread.

 Selecting for Intelligence
    Intelligence increases significantly with distance from the equator. 72 Although high intelligence appears to be an adaptation to the cold, it is not cold weather, per se, that selects for intelligence, as the Arctic people have an average IQ of 91 and they would be expected to have an IQ significantly higher than that if cold weather alone selected for intelligence. The real selector for intelligence is a mentally challenging environment, where survival (and therefore reproductive success) depends more on intelligence than on other traits. 73 The Arctic may be colder, but the people who live there depend upon the same food source - sea animals - the entire year. Thus, obtaining and storing food for the winter is unnecessary and the same skills can be used to obtain food the entire year. In contrast, the large seasonal variations in northern territories south of the Artic and far from the sea, where vegetation must be relied upon as a major food source, make those environments more mentally challenging. 74
    A highly seasonal climate is more mentally challenging because of the many additional problems that must be solved in order to survive. These included keeping warm, of course, but also the absence of food in the winter, the need to hunt and kill large mammals, cut them up, and carry the meat back to women and children and store the excess when the temperature is above freezing. (Lynn, 2006a, pp. 227-228). These problems were not faced by people in the tropics, 75 and solving these problems required careful planning, cooperation, and the crafting of weapons and tools, i.e. intelligence.
    The center of the Chinese Han population is between the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers and extends from modern Wuhan, Nanjing, and Chengdu. This is in an officially-designated “hot summer/cold winter zone” where the average temperature in the hottest month is 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F) and the average temperature in the coldest month is 0 to 10°C (32 to 50°F). 76 It is no coincidence that the Chinese, coping with such wide swings in temperature, have an average IQ of 103. (Lynn, 2006a, p. 173). Now contrast China with equatorial Africa, where the annual temperature variation is between 17 and 32°C (63 and 90°F) and the average IQ is only 67. (Lynn, 2006a, p. 224).
    Since northern women, until modern times, needed men to provide for them and men capable of doing so typically had status and wealth, which correlate highly with intelligence, northern women directly or indirectly selected more intelligent men. There is some evidence that beautiful women are of higher intelligence (Kanazawa, 2004), perhaps because their mothers were beautiful and their mothers selected intelligent men 77 so, since men prefer beautiful women, they are also selecting for higher intelligence. As a consequence of these sexual selections, white women are only slightly less intelligent than white men. 78
    Like all traits, if average intelligence rises it is because people who are more intelligent are more reproductively successful. Since the brain is man’s most expensive organ, 79 intelligence quickly falls again when the less intelligent are just as, or more, reproductively successful than the more intelligent. By vastly increasing the number of people who could survive and by reducing the intelligence needed to do so, agriculture produced the first big drop in intelligence and the Industrial Revolution and the welfare state produced the second. 80

                           Intelligence as a Liability
    The greatest blind spot that anthropologists have is their unexamined assumption that more intelligence, at least in man, is always advantageous. This is a natural assumption for them to make because in their field more intelligence equals more success, but intelligence is not a unique (“sui generis”) trait that is exempt from the selection pressures that apply to all other traits and all other living things.
    In economics, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” (“TANSTAAFL”) and that is also true in evolution. If an individual puts more of his resources into a larger, more intelligent brain, he has fewer resources available for his other organs. (Zimmer, 2008). Why are there no super-intelligent lions or gazelles? Because any gazelle that invested more resources in a larger brain would have fewer resources to devote to the muscles and bones that enable it to escape lions, nor could a slower, but bigger-brained lion catch enough of even the stupider gazelles to survive. That is, an animal’s brain increases in size only as long as the additional grey matter increases his reproductive success; after he reaches his optimal brain size, any additional brain lowers his reproductive success. Since we humans have already invested so much in our brains (about 25% of our metabolism is devoted to brain function) going past our optimal brain size will rapidly lower reproductive success. (Isler, 2006). Remember, too, that each additional cubic centimeter of brain will probably require more than an additional cubic centimeter of the body’s other organs to support it. Unless individuals cannot reproduce without solving problems that require a lot of grey matter, large brains will be strongly selected against. Today, even though more intelligent people have the means to be more reproductively successful, they lack the motivation to do it, so their fitness, and the average intelligence of the population has declined.
    The optimal amount of intelligence depends upon the other traits the organism has and the environment it is in. More intelligence is a waste of resources if an organism does not possess the means to make use of high intelligence, i.e., it lacks arms, fingers, or tentacles for manipulating its environment, or it can obtain all the energy it needs from its environment without solving mentally challenging problems (e.g., a sponge).
    That the optimal amount of intelligence is less in Africa is demonstrated by the lower IQ of Africans (Chap. 4, Rule 10, second corollary) and is supported by the correlation between IQ and distance from the equator (-0.68, Templer, 2006, 121–139). The extinction of large-brained Africans, such as Herto (Fig. 17-1), Boskop (Fig. 26-9), and Grimaldi (Fig. 26-11), the (presumably) considerable lowering of the intelligence of the Bushmen as they moved from northern Africa to central and southern Africa, and the low IQ of the Africans in the horn of Africa (e.g., Somalia = 68), who clearly have some white heritage (Fig. 26-8), also suggest that the optimal amount of intelligence is lower in Africa. 81
    The difference between the 105 average IQ of NE Asians (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) and the SE Asians, who are related to the NE Asians, but have an average of only 87 (Lynn, 2006a, pp. 173, 100) support the conclusion that the optimal IQ in tropical climates is likely to be low. Although the Incas and Mayans, living in the tropics of Mexico and the Amazon, built civilizations that had writing, a calendar, and mathematics, and therefore must have had a reasonably high IQ, the Native Americans today of North and Latin America have an average IQ of only 86. (Lynn, 2006a, pp. 130, 166). However, the Mayans and Incas may have come from a higher IQ founding population and may have been in the process of undergoing a reduction in IQ as it no longer paid off in reproductive success.

    Brain size, and presumably intelligence, also fell outside of the tropics when it became less needed for reproductive success. (Fig. 14-8).82 Both the Cro-Magnons, who became the Europeans (Chap. 24), and the Neanderthals (Chap. 25) initially had larger brains than today’s Europeans. It is possible that a mutation about 50,000 ya (the beginning of the Cultural Revolution) enabled the brain to become more efficient (Chap. 13), so that greater intelligence could be achieved even with a smaller brain (Lynn, 2006a, pp. 150-153), but it is more likely that the domestication of animals and agriculture reduced the reproductive pay-off from intelligence.
    The vast expansion in the food supply made possible by agriculture and the domestication of animals meant less selection for high intelligence because a person who was not intelligent enough to survive as a hunter could nevertheless survive as a farmer. (The adage that 95% of the fish are caught by 5% of the fishermen illustrates the importance of intelligence in hunting.) 83 Also, although agriculture meant more food, it initially meant a lower quality food than meat, and did not provide the nutrition needed to support a large brain. In fact, if food is plentiful and high intelligence is not needed to acquire it, then it is a disadvantage to have a large brain instead of, say, a better immune system, which would be more advantageous in the more crowded conditions made possible by agriculture. For a hunter, more intelligence meant killing more game, thereby reducing the amount of food available, so human population growth was self-limiting. But once the knowledge of how to farm had been discovered, population growth was much less limited and depended more on hard, steady work than on outwitting game, 84 i.e., the optimal brain size for a farmer was less than for a hunter-gatherer.

So No Amount Of Head Start Schooling Or After School Tutoring Or Home Schooling Or IQ Test Reforming (Eliminating Of This Supposed White Cultural Bias On IQ Tests) Will Counteract And Compensate For This Innate African Intelligence Inadequacy And Change These Test And Academic Results (i.e. Make Black IQ Equal To Or Greater Than The IQ Of Other Races And Make Black Academic Achievement Equal To Or Greater Than That Of Other Races). He might be dull, but at least he will survive, and probably stay at home, and help you look after the children. A convincing answer to that question wouldn't be proposed until the 1970s, when the evolutionary biologist Amotz Zahavi brilliantly conceived of a peacock's elaborate tail and other ornaments or displays as a form of showing off, or what Zahavi called handicaps. Zahavi said that the peacock uses his large tail to advertise to peahens that his genes are of such quality he can afford to drag his long, ungainly, and costly tail around behind him and still survive. Like a runner carrying extra weight in a foot race and still winning, handicapping yourself is the key to the message of your genetic worth. Less genetically fit peacocks could perhaps make a large tail, but couldn't withstand such a drain on their energy and resources. Natural selection favors males that can make ever more extreme ornaments because this is a way of showing the females who is wheat and who is mere chaff.

The females' aesthetic preferences now evolve for a good reason: "the medium is the message" in Marshall McLuhan's memorable phrase. Here the medium is a wasteful display whose message is, "you can believe me." It is a symbol of something greater lurking underneath, and this is why the peahens prefer it. The sociologist Thorsten Veblen anticipated this idea seventy-five year before in his Theory of the Leisure Class. Veblen made the bold claim that rich people throughout history have advertised their wealth through acts of what he called conspicuous consumption - ostentatious and extravagant displays that genuinely reveal how much they have by showing how much they can afford to throw away on otherwise useless objects. As with the peacocks tail, the waste allows us a way of glimpsing what must lie behind the flamboyance. One of Veblen's favorite examples was the bizarre behavior of the so-called potlach Native American tribes of the American Pacific Northwest. These tribes would invite a neighboring tribe - potential adversaries - to a lavish feast. When their guests had finished and were preparing to return to their village, the hosts would erect a bonfire and and throw blankets, food, and even canoes on to it. Was this superstition, an offering to a god, or perhaps disgust at the thought that their guests carried lice or some infectious disease that needed to be eradicated? No. To Veblen it was their way of showing, or perhaps warning, their neighbors just how much they had in reserve by showing how much they could afford to lose.

Veblen's and Zahavi's ideas tell us something startling: some traits and behaviors evolve precisely because they are reckless and wasteful, and the more reckless and wasteful they are, the more they tell us something believable about the owner. This is why a $25,000 wristwatch is better than a $10 one, despite both keeping equally good time, or a Ferrari better than a Ford even if you only need to get to the nearest shop. It is why larger diamonds make better engagement rings, why silver is better than silverplating, why turning your back on your adversary is so compelling, and why fifty pairs of shoes are better than the one pair you need to protect your feet. Famously, in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, it is the size of Mr. Darcy's house and not his looks or personality that finally takes Elizabeth's breath away, helping to convince her to marry him. No one needs a home with hundreds of rooms, but that is not the point. It is precisely because Mr. Darcy does not need the rooms that his house advertises he has wealth to burn.

For instance, a peacock's giant tail tells us that he is healthy because it is so costly and wasteful to produce. Peahens know that only the fittest males can afford to make the biggest tails: less fit males can try but will probably die from the burdens of their giant tails. Similarly, we speculated that one possible function of religious belief was to signal your commitment to the group - religious beliefs and practices such as self-flagellation, memorizing scripture, or fasting can be costly, and for that reason can become believable signals. We also instinctively recognize Veblen's idea in the conspicuous consumption of wealthy people. A huge diamond engagement ring or an expensive car have little functional value over other rings or cars, and that is precisely why they are good signals that someone is wealthy - how else could they have so much money to waste? They are useful signals because they are expensive ways of being useless.

Zahavi and Veblen even went a step further and often emphasized that the best signals were those that were directly relevant to what an animal was trying to tell you. One of Zahavi's favorite examples was the "stotting" behavior of some gazelle species when being chased by lions. As the lion pursues the gazelle, the gazelle punctuates its escape with stots, a series of little pronks or prongs that involve jumping straight up into the air, legs stiff, and lifting all four feet off the ground. Why would they do such a ridiculous thing? Wouldn't it be far better for the gazelle to put all its energy and time into running away? About the only worse things for the gazelle would be to stop running altogether, or turn around and run at the lion. Another of Zahavi's examples is the curious behavior of the skylark, which when being pursued for its life by the predatory merlin seemingly looks over its shoulder and begins to sing.

All of these actions use up the very resource an animal needs to escape or protect itself, and that makes them informative about the animal's abilities. The gazelle is telling the lion that it is such a fast runner it can afford to waste valuable time by jumping vertically into the air, and yet still get away. The skylark is telling the merlin that it can waste its precious breath. Both actions are directly relevant to what the animal is trying to signal to the pursuer - fast running, or strong lungs for flying. If they are lying about their abilities, these actions are the ones that will get them killed. And indeed, not all gazelles stot, nor do all skylarks sing at the approach of a merlin, but as Zahavi would expect, those that do are more likely to get away. To understand the gravity of stotting and singing while being chased, consider that next time you are chased by a mugger, you punctuate your escape with little jumps up into the air, and even occasionally burst into song. Veblen was fond of saying that gentlemen carried walking sticks to show that they could get by without the use of one of their hands. And of course if you are wealthy, what better way to show off how much money you have than to use it up on wasteful grands projets such as a folly in your garden, or a private art collection? Indeed, it is sometimes said that the perfect garden folly is the one that drives you bankrupt. Why? Because to go bankrupt shows you can make the money back some other day.

*Like it or not, we smell, and the subtle odorous messages we send and receive - often unknowingly - have a profound influence on our social identities and a wide range of behaviors, including mate selection, courtship, and the timing of ovulation. The word pheromone calls up a variety of images to mind: mammals communicating using a hidden language of scents; trendy socialites paying $300 per ounce for a vial of boar effuvia that promises to allure the opposite sex; and sorority sisters who menstruate in synchrony month after month.

Although it has proven rather difficult to isolate and identify a human pheromone, there is a growing body of evidence that we use them to communicate chemically much like other mammals. The first convincing evidence came from an unsuspecting place - an undergraduate dormitory room at Wellesley College. In 1967, an undergraduate student named Martha McClintock noticed that many of the girls in her dorm menstruated on the same days and wondered if such coordination might have survival value. She asked two simple questions in her research project: "When did you last menstruate?" and "Who are your two best friends?" The results surprised everyone. Women who spent the most time together tended to menstruate at the same time.

It wasn't until ten years later that the mechanism that causes this synchrony (now known as the McClintock Effect) was discovered. In a simple experiment, psychologist Michael Russel and his colleagues at Sonoma State Hospital in California rubbed an extract from the underarm of a woman with a very regular twenty-eight-day cycle under the noses of sixteen other women three times a week. Withing four months, all of the women were menstruating within three days of one another. The odors of a single person, it turns out, can influence the menstrual cycles of many others. It was still unclear, however, how such an effect might have survival or adaptive value.

The answer came the following year, when it was discovered that men have cycles as well, and that their regular rise and fall in core body temperature and the production of essential steroids such as testosterone can be modulated by the presence of other males. The final link came when additional experiments showed that the production of testosterone and other androgens in men often becomes synchronized to the menstrual cycle of their wives and lovers. Taken together, an impressive display of synchrony emerges between men and women in close contact with each other on a regular basis, and this patterning might facilitate the timing needed for effective sexual reproduction.
